Disability Literacy
So you say you are well-read, aye?!
You made it to the conclusion of nearly all of the NY Times best sellers? Oprah's book list?
How cool?
I love funding the arts!
I love participating in conversations about empowering narratives and soul-stirring metaphors!
I love book discussions about identity politics, cultural memory, rites of passage, and motions of time!
I have a question for you: have you read a book about disabilities, or even autism, lately?
I just want to make sure that you don't sound like a complete dick at a party when someone mentions their autistic family member.
You don't want to be that one that says the proverbially awkward "I know of an autistic person. He seems fine. I mean he is thriving."
That will really stunt that conversation, making you sound real unread and uneducated,
making your conversational partner want to escape you via back-handspring.
Also, if you ever become that family member, you don't want to be that complete unread and uneducated dick who doesn't get it at a Christmas party. Eew!
Just wanted to help you be the better you.
...now....if you will excuse me, I am going to go read a trashy love story, 'cause you know, mama likes to be literate in the nasty too!
