Ugly Too
New haircut.
Children at eight years fill the air with adult imitations, sometimes, many times, without the slightest thought of their psychological implications, I'm sure.
"Your new haircut makes you look ugly, Lily."
She holds it together.
She's picked up some defensive strategies, apparently.
Lily at seven years would have cried until the cows came home.
I pick her up after school.
She says her day "was good" in front of her peers.
Something is traveling in her shoulders though.
Then, as the car door catches it's catch, she leaks.
Then, gushes.
"The hair cutter RUINED my hair! I said a trim! She didn't listen!....I had the worst day ever!"
Sometimes mama forgets that her "atypical" daughter sees ugly too.
The world does not just make ugly for the disabled.
The world makes ugly for everybody.
If only us adults gave our children less ugly to imitate.
If only us adults didn't use the word ugly to describe people, but to describe mean spirited behavior instead.
My Lily Blue, you be beautiful!
You be perfect!
