Learning Meaning

Pretty much whenever Dublin passes me, I squeeze him, say “hi” and point to an item and ask in an exclamatory way “what’s this?!”

I do this with items I already know he knows because it’s a great way to engage in a dialogue with him and it’s a great way to continue to help him recognize receptive communication cues.

I also do this with items I’m certain he doesn’t know. One because I’m curious, two because it’s another learning opportunity for him, and three because sometimes it’s just funny because he makes connections that are quite observationally poignant.

Last night, after dinner, Dublin passes me, I grab his hand, pull him toward me, squeeze him, say “hi” and point to my bottle of wine and ask in an exclamatory way “what’s this?!” I was pretty certain that no therapist had tested him on that one with a flash card.

I’m so clever.

….and it took less than a beat for him to exclaim “MILK!!!!!”

….I belched out a laugh.

I literally belched. I was two glasses in.

He’s not wrong.

Wine is a warm, bottled nightcap.

This kid, my king, teaches me more meaning than a dictionary ever could.
